Biodiversity of the polar environment
The Polar environments of the world are not very diverse. This is due to the location being close to the poles, meaning that although the Polar environments are a desert because they are dry and it does not rain there, they are still incredibly cold and can reach temperatures below -60 degrees.
Not many different species of fauna live in Polar habitats as they will not provide the correct nutrition or shelter for animals to survive or reproduce. Even animals that can survive are found in limited numbers. There is also a limited variety of flora due to the harsh climate, the few plant species that do live in Polar environments are hidden underground or underwater due to the lack of accessible and non-frozen water and the lack of soil and nutrients. The population numbers of these plants is also low due to the harsh conditions. Of the small variety of fauna found in Polar environments nearly all animal species hibernate during Winter. This is one of their many forms of adaption to the high winds, cold days and frozen nights.
The human population of Polar environments is very limited also due to the harsh climates. Those that do live in Polar regions have been surviving through adaptations of their skin, and gaining higher levels of knowledge throughout the decades they have been living there. Human population from other countries are scarce unless employed there on scientific research, although there are many native tribes living in the Arctic who survive by staying to their traditional ways and following their elders.
